Capture greenhouse gas (GHG) and carbon sequestration at landfills

Rahul Sukharia•2 years ago Carbon sequestration through landfill gas collection is a proactive approach to offsetting carbon emissions. By collecting and capturing methane emissions from landfills, we prevent them from entering the atmosphere while sustainably contributing to the energy supply of the community. Through the implementation of landfill gas-to-energy projects on landfill sites, including facilities for renewable natural gas, more than 90% of the methane produced from landfill gas can be utilized in a beneficial manner. This leads to a significant decrease in emissions and contributes to the displacement of natural gas derived from fossil fuels. Below are the advantage of landfill gas collection:1. Methane Emissions Reduction: Landfills emit methane gas as organic waste decomposes anaerobically. Methane has a significantly higher global warming potential than carbon dioxide over a 20-year period, estimated to be around 84 times more potent. Landfill Gas to Energy Facilities

These facilities harness the energy potential of landfill gases, such as methane, and convert them into electricity or usable natural gas. By capturing and utilizing these gases, not only do we reduce emissions, but we also generate renewable energy, contributing to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly energy mix. Rumpke has been collecting and converting gases at its regional landfills since 1986. This project would allow Rumpke to update older technology to harvest more gases allowing for a further reduction in greenhouse gases as well as additional green energy to power area homes, businesses, and vehicles.Here's a list of benefits associated with these facilities:1. Renewable Energy Generation: Landfill gas-to-energy facilities capture methane emissions from decomposing organic waste in landfills and convert it into renewable energy, typically electricity or heat. Below are some key benefits for CNG fueled garbage trucks:1. Reduced Emissions: CNG fueled garbage trucks produce fewer greenhouse gas emissions and pollutants compared to diesel trucks.
