Northern Kentucky Forest Conservation & Restoration

As Northern Kentucky continues to develop at a rapid rate, forest preservation and rehabilitation is a key component to offset greenhouse gas emissions. Large canopy forests are critical for environmental health and biodiversity. The land trust community of Northern Kentucky leads land conservation efforts and will continue to preserve the important natural resources of Northern Kentucky. Funding for land acquisition to preserve Northern Kentucky forests and to reforest where needed are key components to the region's GHG reduction.

Forest preservation is a key factor in reducing greenhouse gases. Trees play a critical role by absorbing carbon dioxide and storing it in their biomass. These carbon sinks help remove significant amounts of greenhouse gas from the atmosphere. Alternatively, when forests are cleared or destroyed, the carbon stored in trees is released back into the atmosphere, contributing to increased greenhouse gas concentrations. Furthermore, preserving forests protect native plant and animal habitats which are essential for maintaining biodiversity and ecological balance. Healthy and diverse ecosystems offer better natural carbon sequestration potential.
